Vehicles have crashed into the Hedges Inn on James Lane in East Hampton Village eight times in the last 10 years, and on a regular basis for decades. The most recent crash, on January 15, left a car carrying four teenagers impaled in the inn's front porch. Lyme disease is the most widespread vector-borne disease in the United States, with the federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimating around 450,000 diagnoses every year, according to the resolution. Incidence of tick-borne disease in Suffolk County is far higher than other jurisdictions in the state, particularly on the South Fork, the resolution states. Along with Lyme, tick-borne illnesses include babesiosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, hard tick relapsing fever and Powassan encephalitis. A public hearing on East Hampton Town’s fiscal year 2025 budget drew no comment last Thursday, November 7, and later in the meeting, the Town Board voted to override the 2 percent tax levy cap. The board is expected to vote to authorize the $103,925,137 budget on November 19, one day ahead of the state-imposed deadline. In its tentative form, the budget had a proposed spending total of $103,722,303. After three work session presentations in October, the agreed-upon preliminary budget adds an additional $202,834.
