An odor of gas in the science wing at East Hampton High School prompted a brief evacuation of the area on Friday morning, but the fire marshal quickly deemed the building safe to return to normal activity. Due to an initial belief that there was a fire in the building, students were moved from the area, according to a student who witnessed the event. That belief turned out to be erroneous, however.
