East Hampton junior Dylan Cashin finished 52nd at the New York State Cross Country Championships at Vernon Verona Sherrill High School just outside of Syracuse on Saturday.
Competing in the girls Class B race, Cashin crossed the finish line of the 5K race in 21:28.7. East Hampton head coach Diane O’Donnell said Cashin wasn’t exactly thrilled with her performance, but given some of the conditions, it wasn’t her worst race. Heavy rain the day before had soaked the course, leaving it muddy in certain spots, puddles in others. The conditions weren’t too bad early on in the day, but the girls Class B race was the last of eight races on the day, so it was in the worst shape of all of them.
“I thought she had a possibility to make All-State, but the competition up there, everybody is like her or better,” O’Donnell explained. “There’s a lot of tough competition, and there were a lot of people who thought they would do better and didn’t.
“I know she’s not happy with her performance, but I could sincerely see that she gave it her all and that’s all I could ask her,” she added.
A runner through and through, running cross country in the fall, indoor track in the winter and outdoor track in the spring, Cashin is going to continue to train in the coming days with the hope of getting one last meet in before turning her focus to the winter season, either by competing in the Federation Championships this upcoming weekend or the Eastern States Classic the following weekend. Both are at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.
