"1st District Matters" is a new podcast series from The Express News Group and WLIW-FM focused on the issues facing the candidates running for the United States Congress in New York's 1st District.

Much of the economy of the 1st Congressional District on Long Island depends on immigrant laborers, making immigration a key issue in the race for the congressional seat between 1st District Republican Congressman Nick LaLota and Democratic candidate John Avlon.

Hear them share their views on the issue in their own words, recorded in two separate panel interviews in September 2024 at WLIW-FM studios in Southampton, NY.

These recordings have been lightly edited without changing the content of the candidates' statements during the panel interviews. Editing of the candidates has occurred only where a music bed is heard, as well as minor editing of the moderators.

A glimpse back in time to the 19th century would reveal, in most of the East End’s hamlets and villages, small general stores, often containing a local post office, where people living in the neighborhood could purchase groceries and necessary supplies — and, later on, gasoline for a growing number of automobiles. And, in the same vein, Sag Harbor Village’s holiday weekend “Keep It Local” shopping event was a success, and it’s a model that should be repeated more frequently in the village — and in every other village and hamlet shopping district on the South Fork. Southampton Town Still Hiring for Lifeguard and Beach Attendant Positions at Eastern Town Beaches
