The public has been invited to the unveiling of a headstone at the Jewish Cemetery in Sag Harbor at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, on the grave of Betty Friedan, the feminist and writer who died on February 4, 2006, her 85th birthday.
Ms. Friedan, whom many considered one of the most influential women of the 20th century, thought of herself primarily as a writer. The headstone was engraved by Mashiko, a sculptor who was asked to create something that would resonate with those who might visit the grave now or in the future.
An abstract representation of a book with an engraved design on one side, the carving “has evoked different images,” according to Ms. Friedan’s family, “the steps of the 42nd Street Library in New York City, her mane of hair, and flowing water” among them.
The cemetery is on Route 114 south of Sag Harbor Village.
