Larry Brandt Jaycox died at his home in East Hampton on January 7. He was 68.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1940, to Flora Bell (née Neldon) and Decatur B. Jaycox, he attended Roosevelt High School and served in the United States Air Force from July 1958 to March 1963. While he was stationed at the Air Force base at Camp Hero in Montauk, he met Dorothea L. Howard, who would become his wife.
In the 1960s, he worked as a bartender at the Flying Fish in Montauk, Chez La Bat’s and the Hedges Inn in East Hampton. He also worked at Parson’s Electric, Diamond’s Furniture and Howard Seafood on Three Mile Harbor Road before he started college.
He graduated as the valedictorian of his class at Southampton College and received his doctorate in analytical chemistry from the University of Massachusetts. After graduate school, he worked at Proctor & Gamble for 13 years, then as a chemist at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health until his retirement in 2003.
He and his wife also owned and operated Merry Go Round Stained Glass for 15 years in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they lived for 35 years.
He was a member of the American Philatelist Society and the American Chemical Society.
In addition to his wife of 45 years, Dorothea Jaycox of East Hampton, he is survived by two sons, Larry Brandt Jaycox II and his wife Tina of Ohio, and David Howard Jaycox and his wife Brook of Rhode Island; three grandsons, Brandt, Hayden and Seth; a nephew, Kemp and his wife Cindy of Ohio; and a grandniece, Kate.
He is also survived by a mother-in-law, Pearl Howard Leone (of Howard Seafood) and her husband John Leone; and a sister-in-law, Becky and her husband Kent Bashor.
He was predeceased by a brother, Floyd Dale Jaycox, and a niece, Kathryn.
Services will be held on January 17 beginning at 3 p.m. at the Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. Cremation will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Lung Association would be appreciated by the family.
