"1st District Matters" is a new podcast series from The Express News Group and WLIW-FM focused on the issues facing the candidates running for the United States Congress in New York's 1st District.

The state of the economy is one of the most pressing issues across the country, but in the 1st congressional district it's especially urgent to address ever-rising costs of living, record-breaking housing costs, and a dwindling middle class. Democratic congressional candidate John Avlon and 1st District Republican Congressman Nick LaLota hold distinct philosophies on solving the economic problems present throughout Eastern Long Island.

Hear them share their views on the issue in their own words, recorded in two separate panel interviews in September 2024 at WLIW-FM studios in Southampton, NY.

These recordings have been lightly edited without changing the content of the candidates' statements during the panel interviews. Editing of the candidates has occurred only where a music bed is heard, as well as minor editing of the moderators.

1st District Matters is part of  Your Election 2024, a special collection of programs, series, and resources from The WNET Group to illuminate election issues on-air, online, and on YouTube leading into the November 5th elections.

The Deepfake Future

The idea for the event began “percolating,” said Professor Andrea Gabor, who has a home on Shelter Island, while she and panelist Don Waisanen were co-teaching an honors class last semester at Baruch College/CUNY titled “The News Media, Toxic Sludge and the Future of Democracy.” A press release announcing the forum, which was held last week at LTV Studios in Wainscott, quoted Gabor as saying: “In the last 20 years, the U.S. has lost close to 3,000 local newspapers, or about one-third of all independent news outlets. The spread of news deserts has also fueled extremism and local divisions, fracturing ... by Karl Grossman

We Are Dinosaurs

Some years ago, at an old farmer’s funeral, his son, eulogizing, looked out and upon the congregation. His eyes fell on all those familiars as if we were strangers or suspects. He looked high into the balcony and repeated what he’d just said. “Some of you, here today don’t know it, but you are dinosaurs … dinosaurs.” He continued, giving fantastic details of his father’s humble and yet adventurous life. The dinosaurs in the room could perhaps begin to identify themselves. He was talking about the lumbering, tinkering, committed types working wholesale vegetable farms with their family in tow. The Bronx to Bat Masterson

So I tell readers I’m from the West Bronx, and even that isn’t quite true. I can’t tell them I was born west of the Missouri River, or even the mighty Mississippi. Heck, I wasn’t even born west of the Hudson River. Let me backtrack: In preparation for the publication of “Bandit Heaven” later this month, advertisements are being prepared for the print media, and some have already been posted on social media. St. Martin’s Press also has distributed several hundred ARCs, or advance review copies, to booksellers and reviewers. I (almost) blush as I report that this material includes ... by Tom Clavin

Proposed Bridgehampton Horse Farm Clears First Hurdle

If anyone still thought that a horse farm, proposed for a 30-acre open field in Bridgehampton, could be staved off, those thoughts were disavowed on Thursday, September 26, when the Southampton Town Planning Board reviewed a presubmission conference report — a precursor to a formal application — for North Edge Stables II, LLC. The property owner wants to build a facility for up to 26 horses with stables, riding rings, a garage for farm equipment and horse trailers, and employee housing at the corner of Lumber Lane and Scuttle Hole Road. Wayne Bruyn, the attorney for Gabi Morris, who has ... 2 Oct 2024 by Stephen J. Kotz

History Comes Alive at Hunters Garden

It is the third Thursday in May, and history and tradition have come to life in a large clearing in a wooded area off the Moriches-Riverhead Road, somewhere near the border of Southampton and Brookhaven towns. Some of the gathering of around 100 men, and a few women, mill around the site, while others are seated in a long column of picnic tables running the length of the clearing, from which, at its farthest reach, wafts an alluring aroma as multiple pots of eel chowder and Manhattan clam chowder bubble over campfires. Nearby, a half-dozen men surround a table on ... by Christopher Walsh
