East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue Chief Barnaby Friedman said that despite some very challenging conditions at Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett on Saturday, the turnout for the Red Devil Swim was still very good.

Altogether there were 147 participants: 57 swim the 1-mile race, 45 swam the half-mile and 43 swam the quarter-mile. The annual swim benefits East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue by supplementing the money it receives from both East Hampton town and village. Proceeds go to additional equipment and training.

“I would like to first thank all the Ocean Rescue Members, town and village lifeguards who worked together to make this a safe and successful event,” Friedman said. “We are especially proud of the many junior lifeguards who swam in this event. The juniors had been training through the Junior Lifeguard Program and were ready to take on the tough conditions.”

Although not necessarily considered a race, there was a professional timing company, PRtiming, on hand. Rodin McKenna, 18, was the first to finish the 1-mile swim in 30:04. Bridget Lockwood, 13, was the first female to finish the 1-mile, right after McKenna, in 35:00. W. Bull, 12, was the first to finish the half-mile swim in 18:22 while Dilin Massand, 25, was the first male to cross in 22:08. Peter Calello, 31, was the first to finish the quarter-mile race in 7:05 with E. Hoffman, 9, being the first female to finish in 9:23. Full results can be found at PRtiming.com.

East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue is a group of dedicated lifeguards and ocean rescue swimmers who train year-round and provide a quick response to water emergencies. They also provide water protection for numerous triathlons and open-water swims and paddle events throughout the year.
