Hikes Will Celebrate Montauk State Parks’ Centenary

One hundred years ago, Robert Moses of the Long Island State Park Commission had condemnation papers served on the trustees of the estate of Mary Benson, the daughter of Arthur Benson, who had purchased all of Montauk in 1879. This allowed New York’s State’s acquisition of the 1,755-acre Hither Hills State Park, on Old Montauk Highway at the hamlet’s western end, and 87 acres at Montauk Point, at its eastern terminus. This, according to the East Hampton Trails Preservation Society, was the beginning of the creation of one of the state’s finest park assemblages, on and adjacent to Montauk.
