East Hampton Village Police arrested a 24-year-old Springs man, Kevin Ricardo Montalvo, on two charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree on Friday night, February 21, after a traffic stop on Montauk Highway. Montalvo could face up to 25 years in prison on each of the charges. According to Detective Sergeant Jennifer Dunn, Montalvo was in possession of 53.12 grams — slightly under 2 ounces — of cocaine laced with fentanyl in the 2016 Chevrolet work van he was driving. A Sag Harbor man, Shane Thomas Cavanaugh, 27, who has been incarcerated since being picked up by East Hampton Town Police on a bench warrant on January 31, remained in custody as of Tuesday morning, unable to meet the $20,000 bail set for his release by County Judge John Collins on February 13. The bench warrant was issued after Cavanaugh failed to appear for a couple of court dates. A former East Hampton Village Police secretary who in 2020 filed a discrimination complaint against the Village, the Police Department and a former supervisor claiming that she was repeatedly harassed, demeaned and berated has petitioned New York State Supreme Court’s Appellate Division to annul and reverse a 2024 determination of the state Division of Human Rights dismissing the complaint. A Brooklyn man, Saba Giunashvili, 33, may have flushed himself into legal hot water after being arrested by East Hampton Village Police on December 27. Giunashvili, who has been arrested at least a dozen times across five states since July 2022, was, as of Wednesday morning, being held in the Suffolk County Jail in Yaphank, awaiting extradition to Bergen County, New Jersey. The body of a Riverside man reported missing in November last year was found in a wooded area off Route 114 in East Hampton on Monday, January 6. According to Southampton Town Police, a hunter in the woods located the body, and East Hampton Town Police and detectives, as well as Suffolk County homicide detectives, responded. The Suffolk County medical examiner’s office was contacted and removed the body for further investigation. The deceased was identified as Luis Vargas-Arias, 56.
