Matthew Raske was last year’s runner up of the 27th annual Montauk Lighthouse Triathlon. On Sunday, he returned to win it all.

Raske, 41, topped the 451-finisher field of the sprint triathlon in 1:06:25. Shawn Faurott, 44, who placed second in the race in 2019 and 2021, did so once again this year, crossing the finish line at the base of the lighthouse in 1:08:50. Mark Lucas, 46, who finished sixth last year, rounded out the top three in 1:09:28.

Katrina Garry, 27, was the female champion on Sunday morning. She finished in 1:21:16. Morgan Grant, 17, just beat out Isabella Olgaard, 27, for second placed finishing in 1:23:16, while Olgaard finished in 1:23:27.

Montauk Lighthouse keeper Joe Gaviola, 68, finished the race in 1:40:26.

The Montauk Lighthouse Triathlon is a sprint triathlon with a half-mile, point-to-point swim at Gin Beach, a 14-mile bike ride through Montauk and around Gosman’s Dock, and then a 5K or 3.1-mile run, that leads athletes up the historic lighthouse grounds.

Vicki Ventura, race organizer with Event Power LI said this year’s race sold out at 625 participants, nearly 100 more than last year. She thanked East Hampton Ocean Rescue for being out on the water.

"This year's Montauk Lighthouse Triathlon sold out and is a testament to Montauk being the perfect destination for a race,” she said. “This sprint triathlon has the best finish line around and not only brings people to Montauk but has a large number of local racers. You cannot beat a Gin Beach swim with a ride through Montauk, a run on closed roads and the stunning finish at the historical Montauk Lighthouse. We are fortunate to have a race in such a beautiful location to raise funds for the Montauk Historical Society."

Complete results can be found at eventpowerli.com. All funds from the triathlon go to the restoration of the Montauk Lighthouse.

Potential Game-Winning Field Goal Is Blocked as Bonac Football Nearly Upsets Host Comsewogue in Season Opener

The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton football team put host Comsewogue on upset alert all throughout the Friday night tilt in Port Jefferson Station, but ultimately the Warriors prevailed in the low-scoring 7-6 affair. Comsewogue was ranked fifth in a highly competitive Division III coming into this season, and on top of that was heavily favored, 92 percent to be exact, by the Newsday staff to win the game, but the Bonackers showed, on the road no less, that they will be no pushover this season.
