Emmy Winter is a Division IV singles champion.
The Ross senior earned the title Monday with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of William Floyd’s Anabel Vancott.
Winter impressed coaches with her strength up and down and all across the court, slamming down serves, racing to remain in rallies and perfectly placing balls down the line. She dropped just six games total across the tournament.
She, along with the top eight singles players, will compete in the Suffolk County tournament beginning Friday, October 21, at Smithtown East High School. The top four doubles teams also advanced.
Winter first took down Westhampton Beach’s Julia Greiner, 6-0, 6-1, before ousting Southold’s Nyla Olsen 6-2, 6-0 to get to the quarterfinals. There, she beat Westhampton Beach’s Melina Pinonzek, 6-1, 6-0, and drove past Shoreham-Wading River’s Liza Undrus, 6-1, 6-1, to make it to the finals.
East Hampton/Pierson athletes also saw success.
More than half of the Bonackers team competed, and Maya Molin exceeded expectations.
The Pierson sophomore topped William Floyd’s Adrianna Filippelli, 7-5, 7-6 (6), to guarantee a spot higher than her No. 7 seed entering the tournament and a place at counties.
“Maya was really impressive,” head coach Kevin McConville said. “It got hairy.”
Molin fell to the eventual No. 2 out of William Floyd, Anabel Van Cott, and did not show up to the consolation final, though no reason was given, to finish in the No. 4 spot.
Molin had bested Shoreham-Wading River’s Chloe Jaeger, 6-2, 6-1, and shut down Center Moriches’s Sophia Pisciotto, 6-0, 6-0, to get to Filippelli.
Also competing in the singles draw were East Hampton junior Lyla Wilson and Pierson freshman Audrey Monaco.
Wilson had to bow out in the first round due to an injury, and Monaco made it through with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Riverhead’s Christina Pagnozzi. She fell to Van Cott, 6-0, 6-0, in the next round.
Monaco’s older sister Rachel, a junior, competed in the doubles tournament with East Hampton senior Riley Roesel. They defeated Riverhead’s Grace Kneidl and Reese Wirth, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to the Way sisters, Ana and Kylie, out of Westhampton Beach, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6.
East Hampton senior Lily Somers and junior Caleigh Barletta also made it out of the first round, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Riverhead’s Natalie Tucci and Gennie Matway, but the No. 3-seeded duo was upset in the Round of 16 by William Floyd’s Madisyn Beatty and Olivia Phillips.
East Hampton seventh-graders Colleen McKee and Hailey Rigby lost to Shoreham-Wading River’s Emily DesRoches and Charlotte Erb, 6-3, 6-0, in the opening round.
After besting Mt. Sinai in the opening round of the Suffolk County team tournament, East Hampton/Pierson fell to No. 2 Half Hollow Hills East, 6-1, Tuesday. The No. 15-seeded Bonackers outlasted the No. 18 Mustangs 6-1 last Wednesday, October 12.
