When a series of wildfires swept across the region between Manorville and Westhampton on March 8, among the areas that burned was the Dwarf Pine Plains, a 5,000-acre portion of the Pine Barrens core marked by the prevalence of much smaller pine trees than in the rest of the Pine Barrens. This week the editors are joined by reporters Michael Wright and Jack Motz, and Polly Weigand, the Northeast fire programs manager for the nonprofit Forest Stewards Guild, who talks about this ecologically unique area and sustainable forestry management practices.

SAG HARBOR VILLAGE — Sag Harbor Village Police, working with the New York State Police Department’s computer crimes unit, are investigating a series of false alarm 911 phone calls they have received over the past couple of months. Justin W. Napolillo, 27, of Amagansett was arrested by a Sag Harbor Village Police officer on foot patrol on a misdemeanor DWI charge on Sunday evening. Police said the officer was approached by a pedestrian who reported having seen Napolillo, apparently quite intoxicated, stumbling out of his vehicle, a 2019 BMW, on Wharf Street.
