Dr. William F.X. Flynn
Dr. William F.X. Flynn of Amagansett died at his home on Friday, December 9. He was 77.
Born May 29, 1934, in New York City to Michael and Mary Flynn (née Moran), he graduated from Fordham Prep School and went on to Fordham University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in classics in 1956. It was at Fordham that he became a member of the Fordham University Glee Club and was a member of its signature octet, the Ramblers. His love of singing continued throughout his life, and later he became a member of the Hampton Chorale.
In 1960, Dr. Flynn graduated from New York Medical College and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Dr. Flynn also completed an internship at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and trained as a flight surgeon at the Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, he was assigned to Verdun, France, and later to Fort Jay on Governor’s Island.
After his residency in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at New York Hospital, Cornell University Medical College, he entered private practice in New Rochelle in 1969. He became director of otolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery at the New Rochelle Hospital Medical Center and assistant clinical professor in his surgical specialty at Cornell University Medical College.
Dr. Flynn married Josephine H. Horgan in 1959 after they met in college. They raised four children. In the 1980s the family started spending summers in Amagansett and it wasn’t until his retirement in 1997 that Dr. Flynn moved to Amagansett full time.
An active resident in the community, he was a member of the East Hampton Trails Preservation Society, the Irish-American Club of East Hampton and the East End Classic Boat Society.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine; children, Dr. William F. Flynn Jr. and his wife Vera of Connecticut, Jane Flynn Taniskidis and her husband George of Greece, Mara L. Flynn and John Poutasse of Virginia, and Andrew L. Flynn and his wife Kristin of California; siblings, Arcus Flynn of Chatham and Lisa Flynn Stec of Manhattan; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation took place on Sunday, December 11, at Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. A funeral Mass was held on Monday, December 12, at the Most Holy Trinity Church also in East Hampton.
