“One of the best ways to understand a people is to observe their dance,” says Johnnoy Johnson. Join Johnnoy as he shares with us his love and passion for dance coupled with his intimate knowledge of his Jamaican roots, as he highlights and educates us on the movements tied to Afro-Caribbean Spirituality. A vital role in Afro-Caribbean Spirituality, dance is one of the outlets used to connect and aid Afro-Carribeans in identifying where their ancestors lived in the Motherland (Africa).
Participants will learn about different deities and their associated gestures and explore movement vocabularies from Jamaica, Cuba, Trinidad, and Haiti. Johnnoy will also highlight the ritualistic nature of the movements and how they are manipulated for contemporary dance and choreography.
