Creativity, Artmaking and Brain Science

Description:

Where does creativity reside in the brain? Why do many people who have faced trauma show extraordinary gravitation toward creativity, including visual and musical arts? Leading psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and educators from Mclean Hospital of Harvard University discuss the complex relationship between creativity, brain functions, and mental disorders caused by trauma.

Organized in conjunction with the special exhibition Finding Qi, an art exhibition of works by Robert Oxnam at East End Arts Council Galleries, the discussion will use Oxnam’s art as a starting point, as he suffered from dissociative identity disorder, caused by abuse in early childhood. Oxnam stated that art made him feel more cohesive than any other activity. The conversation will also include two curators of the exhibition, Amei Wallach and Vishakha Desai.
