The Shelter Island Friends of Music continues its 2025 season with a performance by the Grammy Award-winning Catalyst Quartet on Saturday, April 5 at 6:00 PM. Hailed by The New York Times as “invariably energetic and finely burnished…playing with earthy vigor,” the ensemble is known for its dynamic performances. The evening’s program will feature works by Ravel, Piazzolla, D’Rivera, and Gershwin.
Founded in 2010, the Catalyst Quartet—Karla Donehew Perez (violin), Abi Fayette (violin), Paul Laraia (viola), and Karlos Rodriguez (cello)—redefines the classical music experience, blending technical mastery with a belief that unity that can be achieved through music. Their international career has included performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and collaborations with artists such as Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. A champion of contemporary and underrepresented composers, the Catalyst Quartet’s recording projects include UNCOVERED, a multi-volume series celebrating composers of color.
