MAD will present a free screening of Black Barbie: A Documentary in honor of Black History Month. The film explores the contributions of Beulah Mae Mitchell, Kitty Black Perkins, and Stacey McBride-Irby, three Black women at Mattel who played a pivotal role in the creation of the company’s first Black dolls. Through their stories, the documentary traces the development of the 1968 Christie doll and the later success of Black Barbie, highlighting the importance of representation in children’s identity and imagination. A discussion with director Lagueria Davis and film programmer Samah Ali will follow the screening.
