With unspoiled and tranquil shorelines, Fire Island has been an oasis for vacationers for over 150 years. However, “master builder” Robert Moses had other plans: construction and an Ocean Parkway extension. Unified in mutual love of their sun-washed sandy beaches and hoping to maintain a traditional way of life - with limited access to motor vehicles - the communities began the fight for federal protection through the creation of the Fire Island National Seashore.
