Free Advice Tuesday resumes at Peconic Land Trust’s Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton beginning May 7, with free lawn care advice for both homeowners and professional landscapers.
Since 2014, Paul Wagner of Greener Pastures Organics has offered free lawn care advice seasonally at Bridge Gardens at 36 Mitchell Lane. The advice focuses on organic lawn care practices and is offered in partnership with Perfect Earth Project, based in Springs.
The Perfect Earth Project, which advocates toxin-free landscaping, shares a number of basics to keep in mind for a healthy, green, organic lawn: Refrain from using chemicals that kill the natural “immune systems” that occur in soil; water infrequently and deeply while refraining from overwatering that promotes shallow rooting and encourages fungal diseases; mow with sharp blades and to a height of 3 to 4 inches; aerate annually to reduce compaction and improve drainage and the incorporation of nutrients; choose slow-release fertilizers and feed in fall only; overseed in fall so grass seed may germinate while competing weed seeds are dormant; and grow clover among the grass to fix nitrogen in the soil and fill in gaps.
Questions and photos may be emailed at any time to lawnexpert@peconiclandtrust.org. Also find Peconic Land Trust on YouTube for lawn care how-to’s with Mr. Wagner.
