This home is a continuation of a successful trend we are seeing throughout the Hamptons: new homes with relatively traditional exteriors and clean, contemporary interiors.
The house is located on the western shore of Hayground Cove, which is a branch of Mecox Bay in Water Mill, south of the highway. The property is fairly small, at less than an acre, but it has significant frontage and a dock.
The property was purchased in 2010 for $3,995,000, along with a smaller pre-existing house. This new house is very large for the lot, at around 6,000 square feet, and contains 6 bedrooms and 7½ baths.
From the outside, the house looks somewhat ordinary, but attractive, with grey shingles, white trim, Tuscan columns and various dormers. Inside, everything has been finished with a soothing palette of colors which complement the exterior—white trim and surfaces that are either white or a light sand color.
The tan or sand-colored floors are a bit of a departure from the darker floors that we have seen in spec houses over the last few years and they feel less formal, and perhaps more appropriate for a home right on the water. While the finishes are subdued, there is no shortage of luxury items in this home, including all the familiar bells and whistles that attract buyers. There’s a big, open chef’s kitchen, a finished basement with movie theater, a gym and a wine-tasting room. Outside there is a two-car garage, covered pavilion with kitchen, patio and small waterside pool.
Overall, this is a very attractive property with a concept that other builders would probably do well to emulate. True modern homes are much in demand, but require great design.
