A “green homes” initiative was launched in East Hampton Town this week—complete with free energy audits and discounts on home improvements.
The program is called the Long Island Green Homes Initiative, the child of a partnership involving Long Island Green Homes and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. It’s meant to stimulate jobs, promote energy sustainability and protect the environment by offering residents incentives to make their homes more energy efficient.
“Navigators” will help homeowners schedule a free home energy assessment to measure energy efficiency and formulate a plan to make upgrades to save money and improve comfort—for instance, by improving insulation to eliminate drafts and keep warm air indoors, or by evaluating whether solar panels might be an option. Homes will also be checked for carbon monoxide safety.
The navigators will then explain where to find rebates, discounts and low-cost financing. Depending on income, households could be eligible for cost reductions of up to 50 percent on improvements.
Homeowners can receive a free energy audit by calling 1-800-567-2850 or filling out an application at longislandgreenhomes.org.
