Southampton Town officials want to up the ante when it comes to clean energy—and to that end have launched Solarize Southampton, which offers group discounts on the installation of solar panels at homes and businesses.
“As a region with some of the highest electric rates in the nation, solar power offers an outstanding affordable alternative if the upfront costs are manageable for residents, said Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst in a statement. "And the Solarize program aims to make this happen—it’s a great opportunity that residents cannot afford to miss."
After a competitive bidding process, the town this month selected Green Logic to install the panels. The cost to energy users will vary depending on how many other people sign up to go solar, with the price dropping as an increasing number of people sign on. The enrollment period ends October 16.
The town is using a $5,000 grant from the State Energy Research and Development Authority to publicize the program. Officials have been speaking about it at public meetings and events, and informational booths will be set up at the Southampton SeptemberFest on September 26, followed by the San Gennaro Feast in Hampton Bays on October 3 and 4. Details will be available about how to evaluate homes for solar energy potential, how the tiered pricing structure works, and where to find low-cost financing options for installation.
