The artist April Gornik was hospitalized Tuesday, October 25, after suffering a broken elbow and other injuries after she was the victim of a hit-and-run on Ferry Road in North Haven.

Gornik’s husband, the artist Eric Fischl, said the two were walking on the side of the road, near Fresh Pond Road, when Gornik was struck from behind by the passenger-side mirror of a bright blue pickup truck, which sped away from the scene.

He said his wife was thrown to the ground and also suffered contusions to her shoulder and scapula. The force of the impact also shattered the mirror and broke it off the vehicle, he said.

Fischl said the truck was moving too quickly for him to get a license plate or identify the make, but he described it as being cobalt blue.

Sag Harbor Village Police Chief Austin J. McGuire was the first at the scene, arriving at about 1:30 p.m. Gornik was taken by the Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where she underwent surgery on her elbow.

Southampton Town Police Lieutenant Susan Ralph said the incident remains under investigation.
