Last week’s raucous hearing on the formation of an local development corporation [“Sag Harbor LDC Proposal Gets Worked Over at Cacophonous Meeting,” 27east.com, July 2] was accompanied by an elephant in the room: namely, the fact that both Trustees Ed Haye and Jeanne Kane had been reelected a week before the hearing.
At the debate with the candidates at the firehouse, which The Express News Group moderated, Mr. Haye said that reelecting himself and Trustee Kane would allow “Jeanne and I to finish what we have started,” without going into any detail. To say that this failure to be explicit could have affected the voting outcome is obvious.
Ms. Kane stated that the board was working well together, so why break it up? Your endorsement of the incumbents cited this, verbatim.
The village is still wary of less than totally transparent negotiations taking place around matters of import to the voters. Unfortunately, this LDC maneuver can only be seen in this light.
I realize that we are all subject to lapses of judgment from time to time, but this concept has been in the works for months, without a peep from those working on it.
In fact, an LDC Advisory Committee was proposed by Trustee Haye back in December; at that time it was described as “to be formed,” but this never happened.
In addition, the fact that Trustee Haye raised his voice and was called out by the audience for this conduct is unacceptable behavior on the part of any elected official, in any public or private setting.
I hope that we can move with this as a lesson learned.
