Gale D. Denny of Sag Harbor died peacefully with her family by her side at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital on February 26. She was 85.

She was born and raised in the Village of Sag Harbor and was a graduate of Pierson High School.

She married Frederick Denny in 1960 and together they began raising their family in Water Mill. After short stays in Florida and California, they settled in her beloved Sag Harbor.

After graduating high school, she worked at the County Center in Riverhead. Once her children were raised, she worked for many years in both the Southampton and East Hampton school districts as a cafeteria assistant as well as a hall monitor in the Sag Harbor School District.

One of her favorite activities was going to the beach. As a young girl, she would walk to the beach at Baron’s Cove and as an adult she loved taking her family to Flying Point and Sagg Main beaches, and, of course, Long Beach.

She thoroughly enjoyed her church community and was a member of the Hamptons Christian Fellowship, formerly Community Bible Church, for nearly 30 years. She also had a huge heart for animals, having many pets over her lifetime. Gale adored animals, and most special to her heart was her dog, Teddy.

She was predeceased by her husband. She is survived by five children, Joanne Westervelt (Jon), Maria Huether (Chris), Paul Denny (Sarah), David Denny and Joseph Denny (Julie); 12 grandchildren, James Huether, Amanda Iacono-Gesa, Eric Huether, Marissa Iacono, Ryan Huether, Christina Huether, Vanessa Denny, Katie Iacono, Kaylee Denny, Benjamin Huether, Bryan Denny and Vivian Denny; five great-grandchildren, Rowan, Dane, Salvadore, Duke and Marilena; her brother, Bruce Backlund; and her caregiver Maka Mirotadze.

A funeral service was held on March 1 at Hamptons Christian Fellowship.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sag Harbor Ambulance, Sag Harbor Fire Department, Hamptons Christian Fellowship, ARF or Southampton Animal Shelter.

Cuts That Hurt

If you poll most Americans of all political stripes, you’d find a general agreement that there’s likely waste and fraud in the massive amount of federal spending, and that identifying and eliminating it would be a worthwhile task. What’s happening, though, in the first 100 days of the second Donald Trump administration is drawing criticism, and it’s because the cuts are being made with a chainsaw — Elon Musk’s symbolism, not ours — instead of a scalpel. Surgery was needed, but the intervention appears far worse than the ailment the nation came in with. One piece of evidence to support ... 9 Apr 2025 by Editorial Board

See What Works

A note of appreciation to Southampton Town’s highway superintendent, Charlie McArdle, for refusing to leave things alone. At this point, it’s become policy at Suffolk County that they don’t have a solution to the chronic traffic problems on the South Fork. Veteran Chief Engineer Bill Hillman, who has always been candid while paying attention to the South Fork’s needs in his county post, summed it up late last year upon his retirement, when he had no reason to be diplomatic: “You as the community need to tell us what you want us to do. … Simple, real simple.
