Kryn Olson, a beloved teacher, accomplished artist, and compassionate advocate for children and the underserved, died at home in Sag Harbor on April 3. She was 66.

Born on May 6, 1958, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Duane Olson and Joel (Robinson) Olson, she spent her formative years in both Michigan and Texas. She was a dedicated student of the arts and education, earning a BFA and BS from Sienna Heights College in Adrian, Michigan, in 1980. Her academic journey continued at the University of Texas at Dallas in 1984 and led her to Long Island University in Southampton, where she worked toward a Master of Arts in 1994 and later completed a Master of Science and Art from Stony Brook University in 2000.

For 25 years, she devoted her career to teaching at the Sag Harbor Elementary School, where she was known for her creativity, empathy, and deep commitment to her students. Outside the classroom, she was a gifted artist, often blending her love for visual storytelling with her passion for education and social equity.

Her life was one of creativity, care, and community, her family said. Her legacy lives on in the countless students she inspired, the art she created, and the lives she touched with her kindness.

She married the love of her life, Brian Knab, on December 24, 2015. Together, they built a warm and welcoming home in Sag Harbor.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her mother, Joel Olson of Dallas, Texas; her daughter Sarah and son-in-law Bob; son Travis and daughter-in-law Kristi; her grandson Charlie; her brother Kitt and sister-in-law Robbi; and sister Kristin and brother-in-law Bruce.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sag Harbor Community Food Pantry (sagharborfoodpantry.org) and Project MOST (projectmost.org), organizations close to her heart.

Under Attack

Democracy is under attack, and calling out the shifty, shady ways political parties are taking choice away from voters is essential. It’s very much an issue at the national level, for so many reasons. Not least of which, the House of Representatives — with the full support of Republicans, including 1st District U.S. Representative Nick LaLota — approved a measure last week called the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or the SAVE Act, which would make it much harder for any American to register to vote. Seeking to weed out ballots cast by noncitizens — something that happens so rarely ... by Editorial Board

A Deeply Felt Loss

Gladys Barnes, an early resident of the historically Black SANS communities — the Sag Harbor Hills, Azurest and Ninevah Beach subdivisions in Sag Harbor — made a monumental impact during her 96 years on Earth. When she died last month at her home in Ninevah, Sag Harbor mourned a towering figure in the local cultural and arts scene and one of the people who forged the bonds that make a community a vibrant, welcoming place. Barnes and others lost in recent years have left a legacy in Sag Harbor that is deeply appreciated by those who will continue to enjoy ... by Editorial Board
