Rick Steyert of Sag Harbor died peacefully on September 11. He was 68.
In a manner befitting his life, his family said, he was surrounded by his loving family when he died.
His family said he would be remembered by friends and family as unfailingly kind and joyful, the type of man who never seemed to have a bad day. He had a unique gift of spreading his enthusiasm for life like a contagion, with a larger-than-life presence that filled a room regardless of size, they said.
Steyert was born in Port Jefferson to Bobbie and Richard on May 10, 1954, and had been a Sag Harbor local since 1978. That same year, he met the love of his life, Becky, while they both were working at Woolco. They had two children, Randy and Kaitlin, and four grandsons.
Whenever he had a free moment, his family said, you could find him on the floor surrounded by his grandsons and their toys, deeply invested in whatever scenario the imagination of the young boys had invented that day.
In his work, Steyert became a staple at local institutions, spending more than 20 years at TJ Maxx in Bridgehampton, in addition to decades at Agway.
He was loved and will be missed by many, his family said.
He is survived by his wife Becky; his children Randy and Kaitlin; his grandsons Barrett, Grant, Harrison, and George; his brothers, William and Russell; and his sister Stacey.
