Voters in the Sag Harbor School District approved the 2025 operating budget of $3,735,957 for the John Jermain Memorial Library by a 246 to 45 tally on Thursday, September 26. Voters also approved two propositions that would provide taxpayer support for both the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum and the Eastville Community Historical Society. The whaling museum will receive $75,000 a year on top of the $50,000 it already receives in taxpayer support for a total of $125,000 a year. The measure passed 237 to 55. At the end of last week, the New York State Union of Teachers (NYSUT) announced that it was calling for “bell-to-bell” restrictions on cellphones and other personal devices in schools. The announcement calling for the restrictions — which would essentially be a ban on use during the entire school day — came immediately after the conclusion of the Disconnected Conference, which was hosted by NYSUT and other partners, to discuss the effects of cellphones, social media, and technology on learning and mental health in schools.
