You could say Shane Dyckman, the owner of SagTown Coffee in Sag Harbor, is a serial entrepreneur. Besides his well-known coffee shop, Dyckman owns Flying Point Surf School, has operated charter boats, and even tried his hand in the restaurant and bar business.

When SagTown, which suffered heavy damage in the fire that swept through the Sag Harbor Cinema in December 2016, reopened the following summer, Dyckman expanded into the former Collette Luxury Consignment space and brought in a series of pop-up shops.

Now, Dyckman has opened the SagTown Collective, which features clothing for men by TravisMathew, a California-based casual clothing line.

“The latest store asked to stay through COVID,” Dyckman said of Frances Valentine. “They stayed on a long-term basis through two summers, but it was time to change the concept.”

The new clothing shop is down a short flight of stairs from the coffee shop and opens onto Main Street.

Racks and tables are filled with soft T-shirts, polo shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, and caps in subdued colors.

“They started in the golf sector,” Dyckman said of the company. “They draw their inspiration from the lifestyle of Southern California.”

Dyckman said the target audience was mature men “really 40 and older who are interested in a casual lifestyle.”

He said the company’s clothing has a “modest price point,” with most items ranging in cost from about $50 for a T-shirt or polo to $175 for a hoodie. Shorts sell for $85, with pants and the company’s Cuater line of shoes retailing for $120.

“It’s beautiful clothing,” Dyckman said. “I think it will appeal to just about any guy.”

For now, the shop is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the hours expected to be expanded as the season arrives.

Shining Examples

A glimpse back in time to the 19th century would reveal, in most of the East End’s hamlets and villages, small general stores, often containing a local post office, where people living in the neighborhood could purchase groceries and necessary supplies — and, later on, gasoline for a growing number of automobiles. Over the years, many of those general stores disappeared, making way for larger business districts and developments, especially as the South Fork grew into a flourishing tourist destination. Big-box stores eventually arrived, challenging even those downtown shopping destinations. But it was those general stores, mixed with a thriving ... by Editorial Board
