Scott Weiss of Sag Harbor & NYC died Saturday night, July 16th, of complications from Parkinson’s. He was 80 years old. He grew up in Lloyd Harbor, the middle son of three. He graduated from Colgate University (B.A.) and from Bank Street College of Education (M.S. Special Ed.) After teaching Latin in St. Thomas, V.I. and several years teaching Special Ed. in NYC, he started his own real estate business, Harpoon Realty, in Sag Harbor.
In 1978 Scott moved Harpoon Realty into the Sea Chest, at 11 Madison Street. Scott seemed to know everyone in the village. He was able to keep track of friends’ and clients’ careers, publications, music, art, and architectural pursuits. Scott had a reputation for being an honest, intelligent, and caring Real Estate Broker.
Scott took pleasure in working on the design & renovation of the historic Sea Chest’s empty upstairs floors, turning them into 2 beautiful apartments with the help of Detlef Pump. He was fond of traveling, cooking, operas, doing the NYT crossword puzzles, and reading biographies.
Scott is survived by his three sons Austin, Wil, and Vic, ex-wife Meikle Blossom, brother Charles Weiss (Anne Reinhard), step brother John Dellera, and cousin Allan Gruet. Scott delighted in family life, teaching his sons to sail, play tennis, Cribbage, Scrabble and watching Jeopardy. Scott’s sense of humor was evident as he made “special pancakes”, for unsuspecting guests. He added a thin layer of cheese cloth to the pancake batter once it was in the skillet, making the finished pancakes difficult to cut.
Scott volunteered for several years at The Gay Men’s Health Crisis working on a suicide hotline. He gave great parties for his 70th and 75th birthdays. Our plan is to celebrate his life & 80th year in September, details to follow.
For those wishing to make memorial donations, his family re-quests they be made to the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, East End Hospice or Bay Street Theater.
