Tekla Louise James of Sag Harbor died peacefully on January 13, surrounded by her loving family. She was 80.
Born on August 26, 1944, she brought life and laughter to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her, her family said.
Known for her remarkable wit and wisdom, she was a force of nature whose humor and intelligence enriched the lives of all around her. She had a deep love for Long Beach in Sag Harbor, where she found joy in the simple pleasures in life like swimming, reading, making beach plum jelly, and spending time with her family.
To her grandchildren, she was more than a grandmother. She was a constant source of love and support. Growing up, she made their childhood magical, hosting sleepovers, caring for them while their parents worked, and attending every field trip, sporting event and milestone.
Her devotion to her family knew no bounds, according to her family. She truly loved her family with all her heart and would do anything for them, except let them win at Scrabble.
Her legacy is one of unconditional love, laughter, and an unshakable presence that will be missed deeply and cherished forever.
She was predeceased by her husband Ralph; and sisters Fran Hand, Wilma Schaefer, and Peggy Baranowski. She is survived by her sisters Alice Rozzi, Susan VanKovicks, and Adele O’Connell; her children, Jesse (Catherine) and Reva (James); her grandchildren, Samantha and Andrew; and other family members, including Dawn and Ed Gallagher and Steven LaFountain.
