Whaleboats have been a hallmark of HarborFest in Sag Harbor going back to the 1960s, when author John Steinbeck and others founded the annual event, originally known as the Old Whalers Festival. The whaleboats went under a long-overdue restoration this year to keep them afloat for many HarborFests to come. HarborFest Whaleboat Committee leader Gavin Menu, who is also a co-publisher of The Express News Group, joins the editors on 27Speaks this week to talk about the history of whaleboat racing at HarborFest, which returns September 14 and 15.

Bloody Threat/Amenaza Sangrienta

This column is bilingual, with Spanish following. Can we talk … talk frankly? Because for the last few weeks, the former president-convicted felon-found liable as a sexual abuser by a jury-with several felony charges pending-businesses bankrupt four times, Donald J. Trump, has done nothing but talk — talk nonsense … talk exaggerations … talk lies about our community, with the goal of staying out of jail. Let’s review: Trump has vowed that if he is elected president there are going to be mass deportations. Not only massive but, as he recently made clear, bloody. Durable Insects

Just like plants, insects bloom. They look like one thing, then another: a tight green bud gives way to a pink flower; a gray pupa becomes red, with polka dots. I observe the ladybugs that populate the fields. They come in waves, and when I am washing lettuce, I see what insect is the most prevalent at any given time, not just the ladybugs but of aphids and less desirable insects, too. They cascade over the stainless rim, spilling water and tiny creatures caught up in the catastrophe of my harvest; from their perspective, I make one hell of a ... by Marilee Foster

Hochul Hoodwinked?

It took decades to stop the plan of the now defunct Long Island Lighting Company to build seven to 11 nuclear power plants in Suffolk County. Then-New York Governor Mario Cuomo allied himself with grassroots anti-nuclear organizations and the Suffolk County Legislature in the battle. But now New York has a different governor, Kathy Hochul. The national journal Politico signaled Hochul’s interest in nuclear power in an article in May headlined “New York policymakers thaw on nuclear energy.” The piece started: “Gov. Kathy Hochul has cracked the door open to the potential for new, small nuclear power plants as a ... 16 Sep 2024 by Karl Grossman

Claim It Proudly

All of us year-round residents look forward to after Labor Day, when we can “reclaim” our village and enjoy the roads, the water — and Sag HarborFest. I fondly remember the days when the kids were little and HarborFest was such a big deal to them. For me, getting to walk on Long Wharf with a beer in hand was a treat, as well! My husband and I have volunteered under different tents over the years and participated and watched the whaleboat races. This village event is fun for all. Which is why I am so disappointed to see the ... by Staff Writer

A Choice To Make

After months of reading about Nick LaLota’s campaign, and the misinformation he and his staff are spreading about how he represents Long Islanders, I find the need to speak out to my fellow East Enders. LaLota’s record is clearly one that follows every MAGA-instructed position on abortion, taxes, immigration, the environment and gun control. Are these positions that support his constituents in Congressional District 1? Poll after poll shows that the majority of Americans, regardless of political party, want women to have the right to choose to have an abortion, within common sense time frames. MAGA and LaLota do not ... by Staff Writer

Simple Elegance

I’m compelled to try to tell everyone out here to, if you can, go see an art show. Hampton Bays resident Helen Giaquinto is showing her work. And it is simply the best. She is a living master artist. Her life of over eight decades includes mastery in art in advertising design (Madison Avenue), illustration (national publications), and what we love here the most: her fine art paintings that have been, for decades, shown at the Southampton Artists Association and other shows. This is a chance to see her in a solo show — all her art. It’s at The ... by Staff Writer

Bang for Bucks

I write as a trustee of the Village of North Haven to urge the Southampton Town Board to support the Community Preservation Fund’s proposed acquisition of the 1.8-acre parcel at 3 North Haven Way, which I understand will be on the agenda at the Town Board meeting. This is just a small parcel as CPF acquisitions go — a single building lot in a developed subdivision — but the benefits of its preservation are vastly multiplied by its proximity to a close network of existing CPF and village-owned preserves. It is also a highly visible property, bordering Sunset Beach Road, ... by Staff Writer
