A shorthanded Southampton wrestling team competed at the Doc Fallot Memorial Tournament at Hampton Bays High School on Saturday, and it was a mixed-bag of results.
The Mariners had to navigate their way through the tougher of the two divisions at the tournament, facing a tough Division I program in Connetquot, one of the strongest Division II teams in the county in Elwood-John Glenn, a strong St. John The Baptist team, and Amityville, which they defeated.
Southampton competed down four wrestlers — two of whom were out for testing positive for COVID-19, one out for being exposed to someone who had tested positive — in class, not at practice, and another who was out due to an injury. Because of that, what was supposed to be the first dual meet of the season at home against Center Moriches on Friday was postponed. The match hadn’t been rescheduled yet as of Monday.
Outside of the two lopsided scores against Glenn and Connetquot, Southampton head coach Lester Ware liked the way his team wrestled against both Amityville and St. John The Baptist. Many of the Mariners won via pin in both matches.
“I think the other important thing to take away was that we took some necessary couple of losses that showed what our deficiencies are and things we have to work on going forward in the year,” Ware said. “The most benign move in the world is a killer if you don’t know how to stop it, so we’re going to work on a couple of things so we don’t make those same mistakes.”
Another positive out of the Doc Fallot, Ware said, was that the wrestlers who were able to compete got four matches in, so those who have wrestled the first two weeks of the season already have more matches in than last season.
Ware said he expects to have his full team back by Friday, when its scheduled to host Hampton Bays at 4:30 p.m. Southampton also competed at Bayport-Blue Point on Wednesday and is expected to compete at the Rick Herrmann Memorial Tournament on Saturday at Bellport High School.
