In 1982 Thiele serves as Southampton Town attorney, where he is the chief legal officer and works on the implementation of open space and environmental zoning, and land preservation programs.

In 2024, Thiele announces he will not seek reelection to the New York State Assembly. He represented the 1st District for 29 years, longer than any other legislator in history.

In 2023, Thiele decries state of Stony Brook Southampton campus, calling university the “biggest slumlord on the East End.” This sparks conversations, and momentum, to improve the dilapidated buildings and iconic windmill, and re-envision the future of the campus.
