Trailblazer Lucius Ware, the former president of the Eastern Long Island chapter of the NAACP, died in the early morning hours on Tuesday, September 24, at the East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care on Quiogue, according to his son, Lester Ware. He was 91.
Outside of his activism, Ware also devoted his life to education, working as a teacher, coach and administrator for over 50 years. He was a husband, a father and a friend, his son said.
“He fought with incredible courage, showing a strength that amazed us all, right until his last breath,” his daughter, Leisha Ware, wrote on a GoFundMe page that was raising money for her father’s end of life care. “He was more than just my dad — he was my hero, my rock, and the most loving, selfless man I’ve ever known.
“I feel so blessed to have had him as my father, and the depth of his love will stay with me forever,” she continued. “He was the best dad anyone could ask for, and I will miss him beyond words.”
A full feature obituary will appear in next week’s newspapers.
