Annmary Larson Windels of Flanders died on January 13. She was 82.

She was born on April 21, 1942, in Bay Ridge.

She enjoyed a wonderful childhood, her family said, spending summers in Patchogue on Swan Lake Drive. Her father, Edward, taught her and her sister, Rosemary, to ride bikes, explore brooks, and ice skate. Her mother, Rose, instilled in her a love for cooking and nature—values she carried throughout her life.

In 1986, she founded the Immaculate Conception Preschool, where she served as head teacher for 24 years. Known affectionately as “Miss Annmary,” she shaped thousands of young lives and created beloved traditions, including the annual Christmas pageant and feast, which became a highlight of the community.

A woman of action and compassion, she was an early advocate for children with special needs and actively supported the fishing community that her husband and son were involved in. Her home was a hub of warmth and laughter, her family said, where her husband’s piano music filled the air, children searched for the “pickle” ornament on the Christmas tree, and her love kept everyone connected.

A deeply spiritual woman, she served as a Eucharistic minister at Immaculate Conception Church for over 20 years. She also established the Eucharistic ministry at the Westhampton Care Center, bringing her faith and compassion to those in its care. In her later years, she continued to share her warmth and kindness by reading over the phone to her daughter, Susanne, her best friend, Rose, and her “great-grandbabies,” ensuring her love was felt, even from afar.

Her bright smile and infectious laugh were hallmarks of her optimism and love for life, her family said. Her impact on her family, friends, and community will endure in the countless lives she touched and the beautiful memories she leaves behind.

She was predeceased by her husband, John H. “Jack” Windels Jr.; and her daughter, Susanne M. Windels. She is survived by her son, John H. Windels III; her daughter, Robin Ruggiero (James); her grandchildren, Kristina, Jake, Emily, Mary Rose, James, and Bella; and her great-grandchildren, Nina and Faith.

SOUTHAMPTON VILLAGE — Matthew Kopoulos, 34, of East Hampton was arrested by Village Police on December 2 and charged with petit larceny and unlawfully fleeing an officer, both misdemeanors, stemming from a September 25 incident in which police say Kopoulos stole items from the 7-Eleven on North Sea Road and then fled the scene on an e-bike. Love in Action

On behalf of the Hamptons United Methodist Church, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the generous donors and dedicated volunteers who made this year’s free community Thanksgiving dinner a remarkable success. Because of your kindness, we were able to serve nearly 500 of our neighbors — families, seniors, workers and individuals from all walks of life — by providing a holiday meal for their table. For the sixth year in a row, we are also deeply indebted to our fearless leader, Denise Smith-Meacham. A Day of Quiet

November 27, Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. Morning: I hear the screech owl, the great-horned owl, the Cooper’s hawk, Carolina wren, white-throated sparrow, chirps of the cardinal, red-breasted nuthatch, the cooo of the mourning dove; songs of rooster, flicker, dark-eyed junco. Titmouse, blue jay. Wind, barely a breeze, whispers haaaaaaaa in wind language, lovingly. Tranquility. Peace. I’m alive — ping of chill in the air, my skin zings. This sacred silence is why I moved here 40 years ago. But it’s completely gone now. And why? Was our designation of “green community” just a photo-op? A lie? Words co-opted like the phrase ... by Staff Writer
