In his most recent letter to these pages, reader Ed Surgan [“Death Rattles,” Letters, January 23] bemoans the fact that President Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of defense, Peter Hegseth, was questioned about his alleged alcohol abuse and sexual misconduct during his confirmation hearings. If true, these issues would exclude him from almost any job in America. Mr. Surgan seems to think it is unfair that senators would want to investigate these matters at all. We are all so sad to hear of Sylvester & Co. closing [“The Changing Face of the Sag Harbor Retail Scene,” 27east.com, January 7]. A great shop and a great lady — good coffee, too. Before Sylvester’s, it was Bohack’s food chain. I have a photo from the 1969 Old Whalers’ Parade, with me and Linda Giordano advertising his gallery, which opened in 1961 in Latham House.
