Arthur R. Wilson died on June 8, 2018, surrounded by his family, at the Kanas East End Hospice Center. He had just flown back to New York from Manchester, England, where he was hospitalized following a sudden injury.

Mr. Wilson was born on October 14, 1928, to Ernestine Keck Wilson and Charles Wilson at home in Southampton. A true East Ender, Arthur proudly lived his entire life in Southampton, where he worked for the A&P for 46 years. He met his wife, Janet Styler Wilson, in 1955 and they married on June 12, 1956. They settled in North Sea and raised two children.

He volunteered for many years for the Southampton VFW ambulance, and was an active 59-year member of the North Sea Fire Department, the longest-serving active volunteer. He had served as lieutenant and captain of the fire police, on the department council, as longtime secretary of the department and was the fireman of the year for 2001. Mr. Wilson served in the U.S. Army in the early 1950s and his unit witnessed the atom bomb tests in the Nevada desert, eventually being sent into “ground zero” for the military to see how quickly troops could be deployed after a detonation. He was also very active on the retreat program The Walk to Emmaus, which is sponsored by the New York United Methodist Church, helping to bring many pilgrims to know the joy and love of having Jesus Christ in their lives.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife of 63 years, Janet; his daughter, Patrica Wilson Chuppe and husband Dennis of East Quogue; his son, Robert Wilson and fiancée Jeanne Schramm of Calverton; two grandchildren, Allison Foster of Iowa and Michael Chuppe of Westhampton Beach; and two great-grandchildren, Bradly and Zachary Foster of Iowa.

A wake was held at Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton and a funeral service at the Hamptons United Methodist Church, where he had been baptized 89 years prior. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to North Sea Fire Department Scholarship Fund or to the United Methodist Church’s Hamptons or Riverhead parish.

The Mountain

Southampton Town officials, it must be said, are very much on point when it comes to affordable housing.
