Gordon Herr needs to step down as Southampton Town Democratic Committee chairman. To say this man has a bad attitude toward people is an understatement and threatens to do overwhelming harm to the Democratic Party here in the Hamptons.
Mr. Herr has alienated people, including myself, through his texts and posts on social media. He’s gone so far as to attack the press — but his latest move is truly idiotic [“Republican Candidate Drops Out of Southampton Supervisor Race, Joining Democratic Turmoil,” 27east.com, April 7].
At a time when Democrats are rallying with “Hands Off!” protests and the stock market is reeling from Donald Trump’s reckless tariffs, Gordon Herr “bent the knee” to Republicans.
After both of his original candidates for Southampton Town Council quit — despite the committee working hard to gather hundreds of signatures — he replaced them with only one name. That’s right: one. In doing so, he handed a Town Council seat to a Republican, depriving voters of a Democratic option.
As The Press editorial pointed out [“Under Attack,” April 17], U.S. Representative Nick LaLota voted to make it harder for people to vote. Gordon Herr said, “Hold my beer.”
Gordon Herr’s actions reek of an insider deal and confirm what many of us have feared: One man now controls the make-up of our town government.
Look to Gordon Herr when you want to understand why we’re paying higher taxes, watching overdevelopment run rampant, dealing with polluted water, deteriorating relations with the Shinnecock Nation, and still failing to solve the affordable housing and traffic crisis.
He’s not just bad for the Democratic Party — he’s bad for Southampton Town.
