Southampton Town will take steps to force a Hampton Bays property owner to clean up what officials say is an illegal and unsanitary mess on a lot behind Main Street — the foul smell of which can be detected from Good Ground Park.
Assistant Town Attorney Sean Cambridge asked the Town Board on Tuesday to authorize town staff to take action to enforce health and safety codes at 40 West Montauk Highway, a 1.3-acre flag lot on the north side of Main Street.
Cambridge said that the property owner has failed to respond to two Justice Court summonses and that the property is littered with RVs, which the attorney said are presumed to be illegally occupied, a large number of barn animals like emu, goats, chickens and “all sorts of animals,” and that raw sewage appears to be spilled on the ground.
Cambridge said that Animal Control officers have been to the property and said that the animals appear to be cared for and in good health, but that they may violate codes regarding keeping farm animals.
The board unanimously gave staff permission to take whatever action is necessary to clean up the property.
