Benjamin Halsey Conklin of Bridgehampton died on October 29. He was 88.

Born on December 19,1935, at Breeze Hill, Bridgehampton, he was an 11th generation East Ender.

He graduated from Bridgehampton High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served proudly for five years. He was stationed in several locations, including Greenland. He shared many fond memories with family and friends. He especially loved working as a dental assistant.

After his service in the Air Force, he returned to Breeze Hill to work beside his father Otis and brother Tom on the farm. His roots were in the land. The beauty of growing crops and the seasonal changes to the landscape evoked a sense of peace and contentment for him.

He loved his home, his gardens, his family, his partner, his friends and his kitty Lilac. Ben had a great sense of humor and a unique laugh that was contagious, his family said. He loved to talk about his family history and tell stories about his relatives.

He was devoted to his mother and cared for her as she aged. In later years, he spent the winter months at his condo in Ft. Lauderdale. Come springtime, he was always happy to return to Breeze Hill. He will be missed by his family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Otis and Anna; sister Nancy Halsey; brother Thomas; and nephew Lee Halsey. He is survived by his partner Mark Marei; sister Ellen Subin; sister in-law Margaret Conklin; nieces Melanie Yanus (Richard), Diana Conklin and Erin Conklin Whitmore (Gregory); nephews Tom Conklin and Ross Conklin (Jennifer); great-nieces Grace Conklin and Lilly Conklin; and great-nephews Aaron Halsey, David Conklin, Samuel Conklin and Bradley Halsey (Robin); great-great-nieces Elizabeth and Charlotte Halsey; and great-great nephew Harrison Halsey.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any contributions be made to either the Bridgehampton Fire Department (bridgehamptonvfd.org) or ARF of the Hamptons (arfhamptons.org).

Sag Harbor Village Police Reports for the Week of January 16

SAG HARBOR VILLAGE — The manager of a store on Main Street came into police headquarters on Division Street on Saturday evening, complaining that she was being harassed by a woman who had entered the store a couple of times over the preceding days and berated the manager. This began, the police report indicates, last Thursday when the woman came in, and said to the manager, “Do you know who I am?” The woman then told the manager that she needed to apologize to the woman’s son. The manager told police that at the time, there were customers in the ... by Staff Writer

Death Rattles

The final death rattles of the Joe Biden presidency have been heard as the inauguration of the 47th president will have occurred by the issuance of this edition of The Press. We have heard Joe Biden darkly warn us of an age of oligarchy that he believes is upon us. He also took credit for many accomplishments that, if true, should have buoyed his final dismal approval ratings, which stood at 36 percent. Finally, the nation and the world can look forward to an America that leads again. Happily, for some there has been a cease fire negotiated in Gaza ... by Staff Writer

A Warning

For those of you who have watched Netflix’s “Squid Games,” I hope your reaction was the same as mine: repulsion. I urge everyone to experience this allegory. The harsh lessons provided should deeply disturb (scare) all Americans regardless of their party loyalty. In a nutshell, the show displays South Korea, a once monetarily struggling country, today (and by what means). It has become an economic powerhouse. It is indeed a tragic tale. I was horrified by what I learned. Yes, this series is an ultra-violent production, but I made myself watch the full season. I need not watch season two. ... by Staff Writer

How Did We Get Here?

On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump — still screaming about a stolen election (the “Big Lie” that was struck down in 60 courts) — spit all over our country’s Constitution by sending an angry mob to the Capitol to savagely beat police officers and threaten the life of his own vice president, in an unprecedented and shameful attempt to upend the peaceful transfer of power. On January 20, 2025, Trump will place his left hand on a Bible, raise his right hand, and promise to “preserve and protect the Constitution.” Really? They’d better have a fire extinguisher on hand in ... by Staff Writer

Miguel Juan-Pedro, 39, of East Hampton was charged with misdemeanor DWI by Sag Harbor Village Police on Friday night. Juan-Pedro was driving a 2006 Nissan Frontier north on Division Street in the village near Love Lane, police said, when he swerved across the white shoulder line, almost striking the curb before regaining control, leading to a traffic stop.
