Bicycles Needed

Neighbors In Support of Immigrants is planning our fourth annual Bicycle Recycling Day. We began this project because transportation to summer jobs is often difficult for teens and families who have no car or just one car. We have never had any leftover bikes, showing that people need them.

This year, we have formed a new partnership with Long Island Bicycle Cooperative. They have workshops where they accept bikes in any condition, repair them and give them away. This year, they have said they would give us 50 road-ready bikes, more than we’ve had before. In return, we will collect used bikes, as we have done in the past, and give them to the co-op. The difference from prior years is that we can take bikes in any condition.

We have one volunteer, Jim Dreeben, who will pick up bikes and deliver them, but he can’t do it alone. Volunteers who can give a few hours or a day to this project can email supportimmigrants@gmail.com. We have another neighbor who will store bikes in Hampton Bays until we have a truckload to bring to the workshop in Manorville. Of course, people can donate bikes directly to the co-op.

Thanks to the support of bike donors, Southampton Parks and Recreation, Centro Corazon de Maria, and The Press, we hope for another successful bike distribution.

Our Bicycle Recycling Day will be May 4, from noon to 2 p.m., at Red Creek Park in Hampton Bays.
