It was quite a day for Laura Bowery.

The veteran trainer and professional rider has been competing and bringing clients to the Hampton Classic for years, and has picked up plenty of tri-color ribbons along the way. But this past Sunday was one of her best opening day outings ever.

Bowery, who owns Sea Aire Inc., a show barn based in Water Mill, was virtually unbeatable in the Anne Aspinall Ring on Sunday, taking home champion and reserve honors in several of the featured hunter divisions on Locals Day. Bowery won one of the day’s biggest honors, the Grand Local Hunter Championship, with Capote, one of several horses she was competing that day. Capote is an 11-year-old Westphalian gelding owned by Denise Landman. Bowery rode Capote in the local hunter pro division (where each horse is ridden by a rider with professional rather than amateur status). Their efforts earned them two Hampton Classic perpetual trophies: The South Fork Perpetual Trophy, awarded to the horse and rider who earn the most points in the entire local hunter divisions, and the Eddie Horowitz Memorial Trophy, for earning the overall Local Working Hunter Professional Championship.

Bowery and Capote were the winners in Section A of the local hunter pro division, and she also won the blue, red and yellow championship ribbon in Section B, riding Rocklyn, owned by Anne Byers.

Winning champion in both sections wasn’t enough: Bowery also rode the horses that took home the reserve championship in each section as well, with Creme de la Creme, another horse owned by Landman, and In Bocca Al Lupo, owned by Mare Eyfee LLC.

Finally, Bowery added her fifth tri-color ribbon of the day by taking home the top prize in the $10,000 Marders Local Hunter Derby, with Into The Sky OMHG, a 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Gregory Uni. The pair came out on top in a field of 34, earning 174 points in the two-round format.

While Bowery dominated the Anne Aspinall Ring, several other riders had their moments in the spotlight on Locals Day, where many of the classes are specifically set for riders who stable their horses on Long Island. In the Local Hunter Non-Pro Division, Brett Lieb of Water Mill was champion with her horse, Goodman. Lieb trains with Kate O’Donnell of Twin Oaks Stables. Stella Propp of New York City, who trains with Brianne Goutall LLC, won the Local Amateur Owner Hunter Championship with her horse, Catena 5.

Kenzie Smith of Shoreham was champion in the Local Junior Hunter Division with her horse, Escapade, owned by Derby Hill Farm LLC. Smith trains with Heather Acker of Derby Hill Farm, located in Calverton.

In the leadline division, Siena Pepa, Aine Bykov, Evie Rohn Wolffer and Charlotte Kim all won their sections in the 2- to 4-year-old division. In the 5- to 7-year-old division, Ekaterina Jean-Gilles, Carolina Hsu, Antonia Falco, Addie Wellington and Gemma Klein all won their sections. There were 52 competitors in the older division, and 34 in the younger division. The leadline riders are led around the Grand Prix ring on their ponies by a trainer or handler, and are then each asked three horse or horse-care related trivia questions by legendary Grand Prix rider Joe Fargis, an Olympic gold medalist who has served as judge for the leadline class for years.

Finally, the brand new all-weather footing installed by i-EquiTek in the Grand Prix ring this summer had its debut for competition. Fittingly, seven-time Grand Prix winner McLain Ward won the first big jumper class of the week, taking the top prize in the $30,000 Hampton Classic Jumper Challenge aboard the 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Faro.
