Brandon Shaw Allen of Hampton Bays, who bravely battled a neuromuscular disease for many years, died on February 26. He was 34.

He was a beacon of strength and positive energy throughout his journey, inspiring those around him with his resilience and unwavering spirit, his family said, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and a deep commitment to his family.

As a child and young man, he was always smiling and laughing, his family remembered, never giving in to his disability.

Even in the face of adversity, he had hopes and dreams of becoming a schoolteacher, due to the love and support he received from his own educators. His zest for life inspired all who knew him, and his love for many was returned threefold. His compassion for people led him to volunteer as a Big Brother and as a caregiver for an ailing neighbor for years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed Boy Scouts, karate, baseball, tennis, soccer, swimming and camping. He liked music — the Beach Boys were a favorite. He especially enjoyed being with family and friends and playing games. Sorry, Uno and Poker were among his favorites. He had a quick, infectious laugh and enjoyed a corny joke.

He was an avid student, always striving to do his best in school. He graduated with a Regents diploma with honors. He also received the Suffolk County Zone Award for Citizenship, Physical Education and Scholarship. He also received the Hampton Bays Fire Department award, the Hampton Bays CSEA award, and the President’s Award of Educational Excellence and Academic Achievement.

He was predeceased by his grandparents Rosalie Allen, Richard W. Allen Jr., and Joan Bowers; his great uncle Herb Allen; and his great aunt Thelma Allen. He is survived by his parents Catherine and Randolph Allen; his aunts and uncles Richard W. Allen III and Beth Allen, Moira Allen, Robert Bennett Sr., Holly Bennett, Tim and Marianna Bennett, Patty Bennett, Mary Jo and Doug Thies, Bryan and Michelle Clay, and Mark Clay; his cousins Caitlin Allen, Eric Dilbeck, Robert Bennett Jr., Jason Fava, Skylar Thies, April and Alex Bennett, Jace Clay, Jameson Bennett, Liam and Everly Dilbeck, Eva and Korra Fava, and Kennedy Hardeman; and his compassionate longtime caregiver and companion Stephen Badu.

Shining Examples

A glimpse back in time to the 19th century would reveal, in most of the East End’s hamlets and villages, small general stores, often containing a local post office, where people living in the neighborhood could purchase groceries and necessary supplies — and, later on, gasoline for a growing number of automobiles. Over the years, many of those general stores disappeared, making way for larger business districts and developments, especially as the South Fork grew into a flourishing tourist destination. Big-box stores eventually arrived, challenging even those downtown shopping destinations. But it was those general stores, mixed with a thriving ... by Editorial Board

Staying Alive

And, in the same vein, Sag Harbor Village’s holiday weekend “Keep It Local” shopping event was a success, and it’s a model that should be repeated more frequently in the village — and in every other village and hamlet shopping district on the South Fork. It was the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce that undertook the very simple campaign to encourage people not just to walk the streets of Sag Harbor but to cross the threshold and actually spend some money. Because the village has no issue with foot traffic these days, but its merchants are struggling. That’s the theme ... by Editorial Board

The Town of Southampton is still actively seeking employees to staff its many beaches, particularly the bays and oceans in the eastern portion of the town, and is offering new locations for lifeguard training courses to help make the process run more smoothly and, hopefully, attract new candidates.
