Old School

The beach parking lot looks like plover flight school. The tiny birds, chattering enthusiastically, look like oversized butterflies fluttering their wings, flying just inches above the ground. Last year, I observed them in a more advanced stage, when they were starting to fly in formation. I took note of a few slow students and definitely an unruly one. Looking back over my years as a middle school teacher, other than a few exceptional students, the ones I remember best were the “bad kids.” Since I taught remedial reading as well as English, I generally had the difficult students. Killed the Bill

Americans want a secure border, resources for border officers, a better asylum system, and a path to citizenship for those who deserve it. Bipartisan senators worked for years toward mutually acceptable reforms. This was not easily accomplished, but their compromise bill was tough and fair and found support in Congress. The bill would increase border technology to detect fentanyl. Give the president the authority to impose sanctions on governments and people involved in trafficking drugs. Provide more than $1.4 billion to fund services for immigration and expedited work permitting for qualified people already in the country. The border security budget ... by Staff Writer

No Simple Soliution

It was H.L. Mencken who famously quipped: “For every complex problem there is a solution which is clear, simple and wrong.” Perhaps Bill Hillman’s recent trip down memory lane surrounding the “lost opportunity” of a Sunrise Highway extension as our “simple solution” of today’s traffic nightmare [“Traffic Solutions Face a Daunting Opponent on South Fork: Residents,” 27east.com, August 14] would prompt your editors to release a 50-year anniversary recap of this grandiose plan? After all, the clear evidence of mitigating congestion through highway construction is readily on display in the traffic-free nirvanas of Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, and even our ... by Staff Writer

Money Talks

I think it a travesty of justice and a moral disgrace that the Millers were able to avoid jail time in the unnecessary deaths of two women, in the prime of life, who simply wanted a nice vacation [“Owners of Noyac House Where Sisters Died in 2022 Fire Plead Guilty,” 27east.com, August 26]. That the Millers allowed people to rent their house knowing there were no permits obtained, no working smoke detectors and no certified contractors employed to make the renovations should mandate a jail sentence. They may be well-intentioned people, but they gave no regard to possible mishaps. Twenty-nine ... by Staff Writer

The Real Story

I have become increasingly disturbed by all the misinformation in several articles, Letters to the Editor and villagewide emails about beautiful Lake Agawam. Many false statements contained therein have now even been picked up by New York City and international publications, which has not been helpful to the reputation of our wonderful village. It has recently been stated that our lake is the most polluted in New York State — which is simply not true. Clean water expert Dr. Christopher Gobler has said unequivocally that Lake Agawam is not the most polluted lake in the state, nor is it even ... by Staff Writer

Feckless Board

After the two-week period during which the Southampton Town Board agreed to consider the Canal BESS applicant’s plea not to be considered in the extended battery energy storage system moratorium, two letters were sent to the board concerning the decision and timing of the plea. Requested also was confirmation of public comments by the BESS advisory committee that no BESS installation would be in a residential area. No answer. Now we learn that the Shinnecock Nation sovereignty is making a mockery of our Town Board [“Hampton Bays Residents Call for Road Closure or Protests To Slow Shinnecock Gas Station Construction,” ... by Staff Writer

No Standing

In a letter to the Pine Barrens Commission arguing against a proposed 600-acre golf course resort in East Quogue known as the Lewis Road Planned Residential Development, or PRD, I recommended that the commission create a task force to pursue an independent investigation into the Lewis Road corridor. Here’s why. Three PRDs were created opposite Discovery Land’s Lewis Road PRD. These PRDs are adjacent to one another, rising up from Lewis Road. This letter is about the PRD closest to Lewis Road. All of the following is documented and archived. The property in question was owned by a local real ... by Staff Writer

For the Good Guys

Hallelujah! The Bel-Aire Motel blight on our hamlet is in the process of being demolished. Such a long, hard-fought and, frankly, unnecessary battle to rejuvenate a sorely abused waterfront site by giving it back to nature to be quietly enjoyed by us. While many had a hand in this success, special thanks should go to Christine Scalera, who was then on the Southampton Town Board. She first publicly recognized the drawbacks of purchasing the property in a financially imprudent way. Her concerns went unheeded by the board then seated. Even more special thanks should go to Cyndi McNamara, who was ... by Staff Writer

Grieving Together

I am a psychologist who volunteered with the Red Cross to work at Ground Zero for several weeks after the 9/11 attack. I was given the responsibility of being available for informal counseling sessions with anyone who came into the comfort centers that were set up for food and rest. While I have many memories of that experience which will stay with me forever, the most poignant one involved the family of one of the individuals who died when the Twin Towers collapsed. The city had just begun allowing families of the deceased to visit the site of the fallen ... by Staff Writer
