Charles Stuart Holmes of Sag Harbor died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on March 28. He was 78.
Born in Bay Shore, Holmes was the son of Stuart and Julia Holmes.
After graduating from Penn State University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering, Holmes pursued a law degree from the University of Tulsa.
He began his career at Cities Service Co., in Tulsa, as a research engineer, then went on to engage his law career as a partner at Doyle, Holmes, Gasaway, Green & Harris, in Tulsa. He was member of the American and Oklahoma Bar Associations.
Collaborating with his brother Arthur in the chemical and refining industries, they formed CHART Industries Inc. He was named Ernst & Young’s Ohio Entrepreneur of the Year in 1996 and CHART Industries Inc. was honored as Best In State in the Plain Dealer 100 in 1997.
His later ventures included engineering-oriented companies in the cryogenic, telecommunication and industrial manufacturing fields.
Holmes served on the boards of the Southampton Hospital and Harvard Medical School’s Endocrinology Advisory Board.
He was a member of Southampton Bath and Tennis Club, Westchester Country Club, East Hampton Golf Club, and Metropolitan Club. He loved playing golf and gin with the guys, and entertaining at his homes in Southampton and Palm Beach. There was no more magical an evening than to be a guest at his table, his family said. He will long be remembered for his annual Raw Bar parties, multiple charity events and summer picnics for campers from the Southampton Fresh Air Home at his home, Cryptomeria.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Guzik Holmes; his daughters Tracey Holmes of Florida, Melisa Moore (Michael) of New Hampshire, Carrie Holmes of New York; his four grandchildren, Austen, Andrew, Hadley and Connor; and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Arthur Holmes; and his sister, Joan Clayton.
He was respected and admired for his magnetism, integrity, and generosity, his family said, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Raynor & D’Andrea Funeral Home. A Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of the Snow R.C. Church in Blue Point.
