Charlotte M. Holmes of Southampton died on December 30 at her home. She was 97.
Born in New York City to Mary and Charles Edwards, she attended Parsons School of Design and married Robert Holmes. The couple moved to Southampton in 1938.
A gifted artist, she exhibited her work in local galleries and art shows and traveled extensively. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Southampton, Presbyterian Women, the Southampton Cultural Center, and volunteered at Southampton Hospital for many years.
According to the family, she will always be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Robert W. Holmes and Charles E. Holmes; a daughter, Maryon Knapp; a sister, Margaraet Smith; and a brother, Edward Edwards.
She is survived by a daughter, Margretta H. and her husband Richard Anderson of Westhampton Beach,; two daughters-in-law, Shirley Holmes of Southampton and Denise Holmes of Texas; a son-in-law, Danny Knapp of Millport; six grandsons, R. Bryant Holmes and his wife Tana, Eric Knapp and his wife Kimberly, Craig Knapp and his wife Jeanne, Daren R. Anderson and his wife Kirsten, Keegan H. Anderson and his wife Sarah, and Theodore Duffey; and five granddaughters, Laurel and her husband Doug Hallberg, Deborah and her husband Stanley Strong, Cheryl and her husband Paul Broderick, Barbara Ross and Corrine Duffey.
She is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren: Hilary Ross, Victoria Holmes, Sarah, Emma, Caleb, Amelia, Katelyn, and Reed Knapp, Kieran, Devin and Liam Anderson, Tyson, Siena, and Corbet Hallberg, Joshua and Brandon Duffey, Kara Broderick, Lisa Stanley, Kyle, and James Strong, one great-great-grandchild, three nieces, Mary Ellen Moyse, Carol Kiernan, Claire Queen and one nephew, Donald Edwards.
A memorial service was held on January 3 at the First Presbyterian Church in Southampton. The Revend Peter Sulyok of the Westhampton Presbyterian Church and the Reverend Bill Evans of the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton officiated. Interment followed at the Southampton Cemetery.
