Christopher John Begg of Southampton died on July 29 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Northport. He was 67.

He was born January 2, 1948, in London, England, to Margaret Ethal Begg and Michael E. Begg. His father married Molly Daskal from Stony Brook after Margaret Begg’s death; all have predeceased Mr. Begg.

Mr. Begg graduated from St. Andrew’s School in Sag Harbor and Mercy High School. He was a corpsman in the Navy from 1966 to 1970 and became a respiratory therapist. He later became involved in various occupations in the auto industry, including as a salesman at Hull Chevrolet Olds in Southampton.

He attended Nassau Community College, and later, returning to the medical field, graduated from Northport’s nuclear medicine program and became a nuclear medical technologist, an occupation he loved.

He married Carol “Tutty” Steckowski and they recently celebrated their 47th year of marriage. Their children are Lindsay, 28; Steven, 23; and Ryan, 22.

Mr. Begg had resided at the V.A. hospital since 2011 because he had ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Survivors said he had a multitude of hobbies, ranging from building computers, to photography and woodworking. He was a life member of the Handyman Club of America. He also loved to ski and was a member of the Eastern Long Island Ski Club, but his true love was reading. Survivors said he would never be found without a book.

In addition to his children, he is survived by a sister, Susan Begg Tureski of Aquebogue; and a brother, Kenneth Begg of New Hampshire; as well as relatives from his wife’s side of the family.

A wake was held at O’Connell Funeral Home on Sunday, August 2, with burial at Calverton National Cemetery on August 3.

Memorial donations may be made to the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter, 42 Broadway, Suite 1724, New York, NY 10004.

Southampton Town officials, it must be said, are very much on point when it comes to affordable housing.
