Colleen Pedersen of Hampton Bays died on December 24, with her loved ones at her side. She was 58.

She was born on November 25, 1964, in Astoria, to Margaret and John McMenamy, and she later relocated to Hampton Bays to raise her children.

She began working at the age of 18 at Local 153, Office of Professional Employees International Union, until she left in 2018 after 36 years of dedication and service.

Friends and family will always remember Colleen, or “Col”, as a bright light, a faithful friend, and the most generous soul. She could bring laughter to any situation, and the beauty that shone from her heart of gold will be missed deeply, but never be forgotten, her family said.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jeffrey Pedersen; and her father John McMenamy. She is survived by her mother, Maggie McMenamy; her sister Michele; her brother Marc; her three children, Taylor, Erik and Jack; and her grandson Julien.

“As our lives are forever changed without our Colleen in it, we will lean on our faith for strength and guidance, and we know in our hearts that she is finally resting in peace,” her family said.

A visitation was held on December 29 at the Oconnell Rothwell Funeral Home in Southampton, with a funeral Mass on December 30 at the Our Lady of Poland Church in Southampton, with interment following at the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Cemetery

Pity the poor horseshoe crab. It is, without question, a survivor almost beyond compare. Consider this: There are fossils of the creature dating back 445 million years. Dinosaurs arrived about 200 million to 250 million years ago — which means the time between us and dinosaurs is equal to the time between dinosaurs and the earliest horseshoe crabs. And they’re still here, nearly unchanged. But they finally may have met their match. The American horseshoe crab has “vulnerable” status, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The population faces a whole series of challenges, including sea-level rise, coupled ... by Editorial Board
